Biodegradable hydraulic fluids for construction and marine equipment

Biodegradable hydraulic fluids, formally known as environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs), are ester-based or polyglycol-based fluids that break down quickly in soil and water and have low aquatic toxicity. They suit excavators, loaders, cranes, winches, and ship deck machinery that work near rivers, harbors, or open seas, where a single hose burst can become a reportable pollution event. For most mixed-duty fleets, synthetic esters (HEES) are the safest choice, provided the system is changed over and monitored correctly. Hydraulic systems on construction sites and ships hold large volumes of oil under high pressure, and hoses, fittings, and cylinder seals do fail. When mineral oil escapes near a waterway or coastline, it spreads quickly, harms aquatic life, and triggers costly cleanups and penalties. Biodegradable fluids reduce that risk by breaking down faster and being less toxic when leaks happen.
