The best hydraulic oil for high-pressure systems is a premium anti-wear (AW) mineral oil, classified as HM or HLP under ISO 11158 and DIN 51524-2, in the correct ISO viscosity grade (typically ISO VG 32, 46 or 68). For systems that run in wide temperature swings, such as mobile and outdoor equipment, a high viscosity index HV or HVLP oil is the better choice. Fire-resistant or biodegradable systems need specialty fluids such as HFDU or HEES, but these come with pressure and seal limitations that must be checked first. High-pressure hydraulic systems, which usually means working pressures above roughly 140 to 200 bar (2,000 to 3,000 psi), place far greater stress on oil than low-pressure circuits. Tighter clearances, higher metal-to-metal contact loads, and more heat all demand a fluid that does more than simply transmit force. Choosing the wrong oil is one of the fastest ways to shorten pump, valve, and seal life.
