Free Up Horsepower in Your Small-Block with Roller Rockers
Drag racers have been searching for tricks to gain horsepower since day one, and there are lots of ways to do it without spending a tremendous amount of time or money. One of the biggest downfalls of the original small-block Chevrolet design was the valvetrain, due to a lack of efficiency—lots of flat surfaces meeting other flat surfaces, leading to unnecessary friction. And even though stamped steel rocker arms were perfectly fine for daily use in your grandmother’s Caprice, they just don’t cut it considering the affordability compared to new roller rocker arms. Whether you’re dealing with a mostly stock junkyard small-block or a highly modified race engine, rocker arms play a big role in freeing up horsepower and helping reduce friction in the valvetrain. There are numerous options for small-block Chevy roller rocker arms. First is a stamped steel rocker arm with a roller tip, which is the least expensive option. Second is an aluminum or chrome-moly steel rocker arm with the stock 1.5:1 ratio. Finally, you can opt for the same type of aluminum or chrome-moly rocker arm with a higher ratio to effectively increase the maximum valve lift. We have seen many combinations, including staggered rocker arm ratios (exhaust rockers with a higher ratio than the intake rockers or vice versa). You can easily gain 20 horsepower with a rocker arm swap, but installing them isn’t quite as simple as removing the stock rockers and bolting on new ones. For seasoned car guys, it’s a quick process, but if you’re new to the task of setting valve lash you might want to take some notes before you tackle the project. If you’re dealing with an engine with quite a few miles on it, now would be a good time to replace the flimsy stock pushrods with a set of hardened pushrods. For our 327ci small-block Chevy, we went with a set of Comp Cams High Energy 7809 pushrods, which are 7.266-inches in length and 5/16-inch in diameter. Please note that the 7.266-inch length is designed for use with Comp Cams’ hydraulic roller retrofit camshaft. A standard small-block Chevy with a flat tappet camshaft would use a 7.800-inch pushrod, but many factors, including deck height, head gasket thickness, rocker arm ratio, and more go into determining proper pushrod length.

Fugro nears conclusion in Moorside site investigation work
Site investigation work for a new nuclear power station near Sellafield is in its final stages, paving the way for full project design. NuGeneration Ltd (NuGen) plans to build a nuclear power station of up to 3.8GW gross capacity at Moorside in West Cumbria. It has commissioned geotechnical studies to gather information on the Moorside site’s characteristics, both onshore and offshore, to inform the detailed design of foundations and ancillary structures and to determine tunnel alignments. Moorside is one of the largest UK site investigations to be let as a single package – a £20m contract let last year to geotechnical specialist Fugro. Fugro began work on its £20m contract in December 2015 on the nearshore phase of the Moorside site characterisation. The initial phase of works comprised bathymetry surveys using the vessels Fugro Seeker and the RV Valkyrie. In early 2016 the Fugro Seeker returned to site to complete the survey and undertake preparatory unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance surveys for geotechnical borehole locations and seismic refraction lines. In April 2016 the Fugro jack-up barge Aran 250 joined the project for 11 geotechnical boreholes, involving cable percussion boring, rotary drilling and an extensive in situ testing programme. The vessel Bravo Topaz was mobilised in April and completed a deep seismic reflection survey ahead of schedule. Further work included bathymetric surveys from the Fugro vessel RV Discovery, and shallow seismic reflection and refraction surveys from the Fugro Seeker. Fugro has also carried out a significant onshore drilling programme for Moorside which has used up to 18 rigs to drill 300 boreholes. Cable percussive and rotary coring techniques have been predominantly used, as well as wireline drilling, for comprehensive investigations and analysis of ground engineering and hydrogeological data. These include in situ testing of hydrofracture properties, high pressure in situ dilatometer testing, packer testing, and pump testing to determine hydraulic permeability. Fugro carried out rotary coring to depths up to 220 metres for the extraction of rock samples and large diameter rotary drilling for boreholes. To reduce spoil, sonic drilling techniques have been used to drill large diameter boreholes for the installation of pumping wells and to facilitate deep geophysical wireline logging. Additionally, some boreholes from the geotechnical programme have been reused to support 2D seismic reflection surveys. Fugro will present data from the land-based and marine seismic surveys to provide a continuous, land-to-sea profile through the shallow transition zone (intertidal area). The site team has also dug trial pits to determine viable locations for storing excavated spoil, which will be reused for landscaping. The land-based site characterisation will be supplemented by drilling and groundwater monitoring to support radiological screening undertaken by Amec Foster Wheeler. Fugro is due to complete the bulk of the site characterisation before the end of the year.

Tractors plough a straight furrow in competition
MORE than 40 vintage tractors and ploughs battled it out this weekend to win one of the country's most unusual competitions. Some of the finest ploughmen from across the North East of England and Scotland put their ploughs to the test during the prestigious Northern Counties Ploughing match on Sunday. The event featured three classes of vintage ploughs and tractors - the vintage trail plough, vintage mounted ploughs up to 1959 and classic ploughs up to 1975. Against the grand backdrop of Chipchase Castle in Northumberland, the farming enthusiasts showcased their skills in four different categories - consisting of "classic", "vintage hydraulic", "vintage trailed" and "novice". Each competitor was allocated their own plot of land measuring 100 x 40 yards and were judged on everything from straightness to weed control. Charlie Halliday, Secretary of the Northern Area Ploughing Association said: "Ploughing is sadly a hobby that is dying, so we try to keep the hobby alive in Northumberland. "The winner of each category will qualify to compete for the British Championships next year down in Taunton in Somerset, so it is quite aprize to go for today."

The Blackrod, Haigh and Aspull Ploughing Competition 2016
AN annual ploughing competition brought farmers, families and visitors from across the region to enjoy a thousand-year-old tradition in Bolton. More than 20 tractors from across the decades took part in the Haigh, Aspull and Blackrod Ploughing contest on Sunday. Early morning rain failed to put off the ploughing for its eighth year, with blue skies and sunshine making for good event for organisers at Brinsop Hall Farm. Competitors came from far and wide to take part, including three generations from the Farrington family. Blackrod town councillor and former farmer, Graham Farrington, revived the competition following a 50-year break and now supervises his grandson Callum, aged 20, and Kieran, aged 19, as they take to the field. The 77-year-old said: "It's a still a popular competition, people come all over, we have three from Wales this year as well as a British National Ploughing Champion, Gordon Monaghan. "You have to make it nice and straight and clean, no land in the middle not unturned. "Three generations of us take part. It is something I've done all my life, my father was a ploughman and taught me how to plough with horses. My grandchildren are doing it very well." Kieran added: "I've been ploughing since I was young and done quite a few competitions with my brother but usually we don't go head to head. "It's nice to have a match at home against each other." The competition is judged in a number of different categories including trailer ploughs, vintage hydraulic class, under-20s and novices. Last year the event raised £600 for the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team with money raised on the day going to the service. Judge Ian Thompson, aged 56 from Cumbria, started ploughing at the age of seven and is a former winner of the competition. He said: "The competition goes back hundreds of years to when they were ploughing with horses. There's always people from the farming background getting involved and we now have novice categories for tractor enthusiast who want to learn to use the machines. "Without all this there's nothing to go in your stomach!" An unusual activity to observe, the competition did attract a few newcomers including Paul and Alison Wadsworth, aged 59 and 53 from Anderton, Preston. Mr Wadsworth said: "We just saw the sign for it on the road side and thought that's different, let's go and have a look. "She's found it so interesting she's going to read up about it." One of the youngest observers was Monty Hewitt, aged two. Mum Tracey, aged 33, said: "He is a bit obsessed with tractors! We've never been here before but have always been meaning to come, we didn't realise it would all be vintage tractors, it's wonderful."
